Going into the game as the underdog, Avonworth knew they would have to make some key adjustments in order to take down the undefeated Clairton Bears. But despite their best efforts, they could not stop a powerful Clairton team as they fell by a score of 46-14.
The game opened with both teams struggling offensively as neither team was able to successfully move the ball on their first drives. After the game progressed and players warmed up amidst the frigid temperatures, the first score of the game took place, as Clairton sophomore Lamont Wade broke free for a touchdown to give the Bears a 6-0 lead.
Avonworth responded quickly, however, as Josh Drwal scrambled away from Clairton defenders and took the ball to the two yard line. Brandon Wasko would plunge in on the ensuing play to give Avonworth their first and only lead of the game, 7-6. Clairton would score before the end of the first quarter to take a 12-7 lead – a lead they would maintain for the rest of the game.
The second quarter belonged to the bears as they held strong on defense and put up 16 points offensively en route to a 28-7 halftime lead.
Clairton marched right down the field on the opening drive of the second half to extend their lead to 34-7, and they never looked back. Avonworth cut into the lead to make it 34-14 at the start of the fourth quarter when Cole Jenkins caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Josh Drwal, but it was too late as they were unable to mount a comeback, and they fell 46-14.
