A new Marvel film trailer just came out for a movie called Guardians of the Galaxy, a cult comic series that started in the 1970s. The original cast of heroes existed in a totally separate Marvel universe from the rest of their comic series: the 31st century. One of these characters is Major Vance Astro—an astronaut who spends one thousand years traveling in space in suspended animation. There are also characters from Pluto, Jupiter, and a moon circling Alpha Centauri B—each of which is the last of their respective race. They band together to fight an alien force, the Badoon, that threaten to overtake Earth, occasionally working with Thor and other Marvel characters.
The new movie, however, involves none of these characters. It focuses, instead, on a new cast of heroes that originated in 2008 and was based on characters from the comic Annhilation: Conquest. The cast includes Peter Quill/Star-lord played by Chris Pratt, Gamora played by Zoe Saldna from Avatar, Drax the Destroyer played by Dave Bautista, Groot voiced by Vin Diesel, and Rocket Raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper. The cast of actors itself is impressive, but also extremely interesting with Vin Diesel playing an alien tree-man and Bradley Cooper playing a talking raccoon with a rocket launcher.
The plot revolves around Star-lord, an American pilot, stealing an orb from the antagonist, Ronan (played by Lee Pace). Star-lord quickly becomes the center of a hunt and meets the rest of his team after being captured. They band together and discover that the orb was more than they bargained for and that the fate of the galaxy rests on the success of their mission. Subtle hints as to both the release of the film, as well as some of the characters, can be seen in the ending credits of The Avengers where they show a mysterious figure, revealed to be Thanos, floating in space.
If that doesn’t sound interesting enough, though, the film is directed by James Gunn who directed both of the live action Scooby Doo movies with Sarah Michelle Gellar as well as Thor: The Dark World. Brian Muir, the guy who designed Darth Vader’s mask is working on the film as well. Joss Whedon, director of The Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as creative consultant of the movies leading up to The Avengers, expressed many times his excitement for the film and praised James Gunn for being creative and twisted with the film’s direction.
On a side note, James Gunn seems very excited about Rocket Raccoon as a character and is looking to do a lot with it. Plus, Bradley Cooper does his voice. The movie, at least from the trailer, seems like it is going to be more comedic than many of Marvel’s more serious films, but it still feels like a Marvel movie. If you like Sci-fi, superheroes, talking animals, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, or if you were already a Guardians fan, the movie looks like it has an enormous budget and is on course to be fantastic.

I’m really excited for this film to come out. It’ll be great to see a group of heroes who often are forgotten by Marvel fans get their own piece.
