On Monday, September 22nd, both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams will be returning to Highmark Stadium to play for the second year in a row.
The boys’ team started the season with initiative, defeating section rivals such as Carlynton and Seton LaSalle in tight matches. The boys are looking forward to the match at Highmark against Chartiers-Houston. “I like playing in front of people, and I feel like I do well under pressure. As for the team as a whole, we are going to do great things this season,” said senior Captain Dewey Konopka.
The girls’ team is also looking forward to an energetic game against section rival Vincentian Academy. They got off to a bit of a rough start, but they are finally starting to come together as a team. “Highmark is a fun place to play and it will be very exciting. I think we are going to finish out the season on a high note,” said senior Denise Stone.
In the past, soccer has not received much attention at Avonworth, but things are starting to turn around. Events like these play a large part in the overall feeling towards it, and people seem to be having a change of heart.
