I think that making school uniforms mandatory on students is a bad idea not because of the violence it can create but also by the self expression that would deprive the students. I think that when students are going to school they should get the freedom to choose what they want to wear and would put them in a good mindset for school to make students work more efficiently.
School uniforms will deprive kids of the right to self expression and school uniforms limits them to think for themselves, lots of people like to dress depending on what kind of mood they are in and when you have to wear khakis and a collared shirt everyday it can make school feel more like a prison because everyone wears the same thing. Another reason to stop forcing students to wear school uniforms is not everyone can afford to purchase them, when going to school not everyone has the same finances and forcing kids or their parents to purchase these could cause bullying problems because some students can’t afford them.
David L. Brunsma, PhD, Professor of Sociology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), co-authored a study that analyzed a national sample of 10th graders and found “no effects of uniforms on absenteeism, behavioral problems (fights, suspensions, etc.), or substance use on campus” and “no effects” on “pro-school attitudes, academic preparedness, and peer attitudes toward school.” This proves that the argument for school uniforms stop violence is invalid and has no results or changes in discipline for students. In conclusion I think that it would make students more efficient with doing work if you allow them to choose what they want to wear so they can dress for their mood preventing students from doing that can put them in a bad mood and would make them focus less on their work and more on how they look wearing clothes they were forced to wear.
