The joint Avonworth-Northgate track team competed in the PIAA State Championship Meet over Memorial Day weekend. Every runner that competed left the meet with at least one Top Eight medal, a huge accomplishment for the athletes as individuals and a testament to the strength of the track program.
The Girls’ team placed second overall at the State Championship. Standout athletes include Freshman Hunter Robinson, who won a medal in four events with a first place finish in the 400 meter dash. She broke her own school record with that time – a time that is the 3rd best in WPIAL AA history. Hunter also took 3rd place in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, once again breaking her own record in the 200. In the mile relay, Hunter was the first leg, and the relay team placed 2nd place. That relay team broke their own school record with a time that is the 3rd fastest in WPIAL AA records. Hunter’s sister and teammate, Freshman Hayden Robinson, ran the anchor leg of the mile relay. Hayden also took 2nd in the 100 meter dash. Senior Rachel Gaugler finished off her final season on a very high note – she ran with the girls’ 2 mile relay that took 3rd overall. The relay broke the school record and is the 2nd best time that the WPIAL competition that has ever seen.
The Boys’ team also had a spectacular Championship meet. Senior Kenny Baurle ended his high school track career as the most decorated athlete in the Avonworth-Northgate team has ever had. Baurle ran the anchor leg of the 2 mile relay, which placed 3rd and broke a 35 year old school record. He ran a leg of the mile relay team that took 6th place and broke their own school record.
