Boys volleyball at Avonworth has been nonexistent for some time, but it will be making a slight return with the joint OLSH and Avonworth team.
Many students at Avonworth are wondering how the idea of a boys volleyball team came about. Mr. Giel, Avonworth’s Athletic Director, explained it by saying, “We had a few boys come to me about forming a team. Since we did not have enough interest to host our own team we reached out to surrounding schools to see if anyone would be interested in forming a cooperative agreement with us to host a team. OLSH Coach got back to me and asked if we look into it.”
Avonworth Junior Jake Horigan will be trying out for the team, along with some other students. When asked if he thinks the students from Avonworth and OLSH will get along, Horigan said, “Yes, a lot of the kids know each other just from growing up in relatively the same areas. I don’t think it’ll be a problem because we’re all high schoolers.”
Practices and games will both be held at OLSH, with practices being held after school and games being later in the evening. The first practice of the season will be on March 4th, and there is a lot of excitement surrounding the new addition to Avonworth sports. Junior Lauren Pflueger said, “I’m going to the games and I’m excited to watch the boys play.”
Sasha Kosko, a Sophomore on the Avonworth’s girls volleyball team, responded to the question of how she felt about the boys team by saying, “I think it’s a good thing! Volleyball is always looked at as a ‘girls’ sport and it’s easy but it takes a lot more than people think. I think having a boys team is able to show people how it’s a universal sport for everybody and anyone can play!”
If you are interested in trying out for the boys volleyball team, see Mr. Giel or Mrs. Cahill for more information. Grades 9 through 12 are welcome!

I did not know Avonworth once had a mens volleyball team. Very interesting! Can’t wait to go watch some games.
Nice article Sarah. I wish they would have had this years ago.
