With changes to the bell schedule, open mods, start time, adding a coffee shop, LGI additions, and more over the past four years at Avonworth, you would not expect the most outrage to come from “BEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEeEEP.”
On Tuesday, November 12th, 2019, students at the high school were surprised to hear a new bell tone to start the day.
Opinions were largely negative – here are a few responses from our reporters.
“No. It sounds like a scary bell”. – Junior Catherine Penrod
“It sounds like an amber alert. I think it is unnecessary because before the bell wasn’t as blaring, and we knew what the old bell meant. Now it is a lot more obnoxious and interrupts lessons.” Senior Mara Bett
“Disgusting. I hate it. It makes it sound like there is an amber alert. Every time I hear it, I think we are going on lockdown”. – Senior Isabella Salerno
“The bells make me feel like a nuclear bomb is about to be dropped on our school, and it makes me fear for my life. So if someone could please change that, thanks faculty.”Senior Jesse Hinterleter
So why did this change happen?
“The intercom system was upgraded over the weekend by Dobil Laboratories” wrote the head of technology Mr. Brandon Gary in response to an e-mail from our staff. “The building administration had become frustrated with the lack of features and flexibility of the old system. Its age had also proven to be problematic when components broke as the sourcing of replacement parts was difficult. The district was able to take advantage of a safety grant to get that upgraded to a modern system.”
