The Avonworth boys’ and girls’ cross country teams fought hard this season. They started out strong, with both teams defeating Aquinas Academy, Sewickley Academy, and Penn Hills in September.
The girls completed the regular season with a section record of 4 wins and 4 losses. The boys ended the season by crushing Quaker Valley and North Catholic. With a section record of 7-1, they finished in 2nd place.
Both teams also competed in the TSTCA Cross Country Invitational at White Oak Park in late October. The boys took 9th place of 19, and the girls took 13th out of 18 teams.
“I think the season went very well considering all the setbacks and struggles that we faced because of covid,” said Laurel Purcell, sophomore.
A significant change for the team were much more strict qualifications for WPIAL playoffs, as well as less races and staggered race formats for COVID safety. For more regulation changes, visit here.
“Both the boys and girls team had a strong regular season. Also, many people got personal records at WPIALS.”
“It was a pretty good season, the boys ended 12th overall at the WPIAL championship, and the girls ended 14th overall,” said Mikey Frank, a senior runner. “Everyone worked really hard and pushed each other to become better!”
