The Avonworth Girl’s Volleyball team lead off their season on Tuesday, September 6th with a 3-0 sweep against New Brighton. Last year the team made it to the WPIAL Championship and came in second place to North Catholic, as well as advancing to the State Playoffs. In the State Playoffs, they lost to Phillipsburg-Osceola who went on to place 2nd in the State Final. North Catholic went on to win 1st in the State Finals.
Going into the 2022 season, the team lost three previous seniors who all played a very impactful role on the roster, one of which went on to play Division 1 volleyball at Duquense. The team is determined to make it back to the WPIAL Championship this year and further into the State Playoffs. This year Junior Nora Kate Gavin was voted as one of the three Captains. She is the first Junior to be a captain in many years, joined by two seniors Mary Gannon and Sophie Culley. Nora Kate is excited for the season as she says,” We play some really tough competition in playoffs, but I think we will be able to step up to the challenge”. Some tough teams on the schedule this year include Pine Richland, Hopewell, and North Catholic.
This weekend the team went to Moon Area High School to compete in a tournament hosted by the School District. They competed against Trinity, Hopewell, BCCS, Chartiers Valley, and Ellwood City. Only the varsity team competed at the tournament, as well as a few sophomores on JV who got the opportunity to play up with the team. Sophomore JV Captain Mackenzie Dawson said, “It was a great chance to get some playing time at the varsity level and be able to travel with the varsity girls. They are a really nice team and worked great together”. Senior Sophie Culley was one of the many girls on the team who was highly successful this weekend. Coaches voted her from opposing teams to be on the All-Tournament team for her notable plays. The fan section is an important part of the environment in the gym, as mentioned by junior Alivia Lantzy, “It helps give the team more energy”. Overall the team has a long and successful season ahead of them with lots of support from the fans and community backing them in the process.
