1. Varsity football defeating North Catholic by 30
Avonworth Varsity Football started off hard with remembering the year before, losing to North Catholic in the WPIAL semi-finals in a hard-fought 7-0 loss. So they knew they would need to come out firing on all cylinders if they wanted to win this year, and that was an understatement. Avonworth held them to 37-0 until late in the 4th quarter when North got a lucky kickoff return for a touchdown to make it 37-7. But all the fans and students could remember, is the pure energy in the stands when the game clock hit zero, and Avonworth walked off victorious.
2. World Cup
Even with the USA being eliminated earlier in the cup, it was a massive sensation to watch because of who we were up against. In our first game against Wales we tied them with a final score of only 1-1, but we weren’t upset since of course soccer isn’t our primary sport, but our next opponent was one we didn’t want to really win, but we wanted to make sure England wouldn’t. The ending was a 0-0 tie once more, but all over social media people were going crazy since it was heavily predicted that the UK would beat the USA.
3. Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard Case
One of the more interesting things that happened this year was the Johhny Depp vs Amber Heard court trial that occurred back in back in May. Johnny Depp prevailed in his three counts of defamation against Amber Heard and was awarded $15 million on the accounts of her also making him be dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and from Disney. The court’s unanimous decision gave him victory over his ex-wife who was suing him for defamation of her name and for abuse in the marriage.
4. Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars
Most people honestly didn’t know the Oscars were happening until the shocking news came out about Will Smith, on live TV, going on stage and slapping Chris Rock after he made a slight joke about his wife. After the now famous slap, he said to keep his wife’s name out of his mouth, and Rock respected that by making another tiny punch at “GI Jane” and then promptly moving on and saying quote, ” I’m going to okay, oh okay, that was the greatest night in the history of television.
5. Queen Elizabeths Death
No one really expected this to be the news on the morning of November 8th. Queen Elizabeth the 2nd ruled over England and the UK for over 70 years covering 15 realms as head of state, and 32 sovereign states over her time and was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history. Her passing gave way to the new current king of England King Charles the 3rd, at the age of 74 he will hopefully rule over the nation for a prosperous and strong future.
