Instead of the girls on the football field, 2023 also featured boys on the gym floor, coached by star athletes trying to bring boys volleyball fully into the school.
The boys powderpuff volleyball game was held on Wednesday, April 12. This senior project constructed by 3 seniors, Francie King, Sophie Culley, and Gemma Kosko included months of running an announcement on the high school announcements.
Unfortunately, the project didn’t see the turnout that they were expecting. There were only around 10-15 people that came to play, instead of the over 20 that originally signed up.
The freshman class had not a single student come to the event, as well as the sophomores, despite already registering. The teams consisted of only junior and senior boys.
Many freshman boys had other sports and after-school activities to take part in, which created a conflict about what activity to attend.
Freshman Marco Arlia explained, “Most of the boys that signed up in my grade had a baseball game the same day, which meant they could only make it to one.”
Boys at AHS have been able to play on a co-op with OLSH since the late 2010’s – see our coverage here: https://avonewsonline.org/2019/02/new-avonworth-olsh-boys-volleyball-team/
