I’ve watched Friends for years, watching it every night with my mom in the living room.
I picked up the book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Things, written by Matthew Perry, because I was interested in another point of view that occurred during the long filming of the show.
It showed some hardships like addiction, which he had to face during these times, and how he dealt with it and persevered. I was halfway through the books when I heard the news, he had passed away from an apparent drowning. He wanted to be remembered for helping people get through addiction, and that’s exactly what he will be remembered for.
However, something kept circling my head. Was his cause of death truly a drowning, or did something else happen?
Does it fall back to the challenges he faced in the book? Knowing that he is now gone saddens me, and probably all readers of his book and Friends fans and anyone who liked his movies as well.
So the next time I’m watching Friends it will feel a little different, feeling like there’s a missing person every time a new episodes is turned on.
We will remember him through the laughs he gave us, his honesty on how he struggled and how he continues to help other even after he passed away.
