Over the Summer Tik TikTok saw an uprise of a trend including the “Grimace Shake” from McDonald’s. The lovable purple-haired ‘thing’ has been a part of McDonald’s media franchise, “McDonaldland”. According to McDonald’s, Grimace is supposedly the very embodiment of a milkshake. One of the main attributes of his character was that he would always steal your milkshake.
On June 12th, 2023 — Grimace’s Birthday — a new TikTok trend took off. The trend was that users would claim the Grimace Shake “killed them” by pouring the shake on themselves and filming them covered having in the shake’s remnants. There were many mixed reviews on the shake, with some hating it and some loving it despite its online reputation. Those who didn’t care for its taste, often described its grape flavor as “medicine-like” and “gross”.
We wanted to see what the students of Avonworth had to say about this infamous 2023 trend. So, we asked around the school, and students what their takes on the trend were: Sophomore Zoe Boyd said, “I don’t really have an opinion on it, I’ve seen it on TikTok, and I think there are some creative ones out there.” The other students that we asked had similar answers, probably just looking to get along with their day.
However, Mr. Affaneh says, “I think it was good marketing because celebrities jumped on it and then TikTok made loads of money from that, as well as McDonald’s.”
All in all, 2023 was a fun year filled with hilarious and memorable trends like this one!
