After a little over 2 years of the Russian-Ukrainian war, it continues to escalate every day with new reports and news. Most recently, it’s been reported by the Associated Press that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to use nuclear weapons if the nation is threatened. In his state speech, he spoke about how the West should be frightened and if they increased their involvement in the war, the fighting could turn into a nuclear war. However, he also said recently that in the past, there’s been no need for nuclear weapons to play a part in the war. The president said that for the possible defense of Moscow, nuclear weapons would be used to protect, “the existence of the Russian state, our sovereignty and independence.”
Furthermore, the U.S. has stated that they wouldn’t send troops to Ukraine, and Putin says if they do, Moscow would see the American troops as invaders and act accordingly. While the war has been long and drawn out so far, the Ukrainian military has never given up hope. The smaller nation has held back and fought Russia for over 2 years, basically embarrassing the Russian military. While the Ukrainians fight, Putin still argues that all their tactics are foolproof and working, “If it turns to official foreign military contingents, I’m sure it will not change the situation on the battlefield … just as the weapons supplies haven’t changed anything,” he said. Putin still thinks highly of himself and his military, even though it’s been an embarrassing war for them. The war is ugly on both sides, for all soldiers and civilians. With drone attacks on facilities inside of the Russian border, Ukrainian forces have been able to launch a series of successful attacks on both Russian air and naval bases.
The funding for Ukraine shouldn’t stop, but it should be cut down because of how spread out the U.S.’s money is. On top of our Ukrainian funding, we’re sending money to Israel and many other countries and programs around the world. The most recent package was estimated to be around $300 million. American citizens shouldn’t have to pay so much and be heavily taxed to pay for other nations.
