Seeded 7th in a championship matchup against top-ranked Riverside, Boys Baseball lived up to the expectations many of the seniors had as they started the season in late March. Win the section. It took 14 innings, over 4 hours and 3 minutes, but the hardware was theirs on Tuesday, May 28th. The championship is now Avonworth’s 2nd overall, and first WPIAL championship since 1992.
The game was pretty back and forth for the first 7 innings; Riverside struck first in the second inning, scoring one run. Avonworth responded with 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Riverside struck back with another run quickly, tying the game up at 2-2. Avonworth scored a run at the top of the 5th, putting the game at 3-2 until Riverside responded with a run in the seventh inning, putting the game at 3-3. They would remain at this score for 7 more innings. Finally, Avonworth’s own Mason Metz scored a run with the help of an RBI single thanks to Luke Zelinko at the top of the 14th inning.
