Point Park shifted their Fall Media Day into Newsapalooza, a gathering of local and regional professional journalists, while also hosting the 10th annual PSPA Regional Journalism Competition. Avonews staff and advisor Mr. Tuffiash attended keynote sessions before competing. See KDKA coverage of the event, and skip to :40-:42 to see the staff pictured upper right in the balcony.

At Lawrence Hall Ballroom on Point Park’s campus, Avonews staff competed in a one-hour write off through PA School Press’s Regional Journalism Competition. Gbemi Odebode and Pedro Moeria wrote editorials, Emma Noss wrote Newspaper News, Ella Bounos crafted Literary Magazine – Artwork, and Lyra Kleindinst and Phoebe McKallop created Literary Magazine – Poetry entries based on fact sheets handed out by PSPA board member and contest organizer Paul Fantaski (standing in the middle of the photo). Journalism faculty at various colleges across PA score the entries in December and winners are announced in January 2025.
Media Day in 2024 instead became Newsapalooza , a series of conferences held in the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Mayor Ed Gainey was the first speaker, encouraging students to pursue Journalism, followed by KDKA anchor Ken Rice and then CBS anchor Roberta Costa. Students appreciated his stories about reviewing an unknown band and asking them to play his prom…and that band was Maroon 5. They also appreciated his insight on Trump and Harris, whom he has interviewed multiple times, as well as his stories about hosting PBS political shows and working closely with Bernie Sanders leading up to the 2016 election.
Avonews staff has won at least one category at the Point Park competition site since PSPA resumed the contest in 2014, minus the off-site COVID year 2020 where winners were announced without a second round of competition. This year’s state competition is set for April 1st, once again at Penn State Main Campus.
Avonews 24-25 staff returning around 2:15 before a final recap meeting in the cafe. The field trip also included a visit to Nicholas Tea and a key discussion about opportunities and visions of Editor In Chief Emma Noss (front right) for the upcoming year.
