As a Journalism 1 student, I interviewed people about the infamous “iPhone Pinky Dent” whether or not they have it or have heard about it. Most students at Avonworth have a social media platform where they can post, read, or watch what is happening now or about anything. Most of the time, their social media platforms are their phone.
Most people don’t necessarily pay attention to how they hold their phones. I would appreciate it if you would pick up your phone, hold it, and open an app on your phone. Here is your chance. Now look how you are holding your phone. Is your phone resting on your pinky? That’s how a lot of people hold their phones for hours on end. This is changing human biology and how human fingers are shaped. If you hold out your pinky, you are thinking “Oh I don’t have it.” Well, you might be right but run one of your other fingers over your dominant hand’s pinky, and you might feel a dent or a dip.
Usually, a person can visually see how one’s pinky is formed, but you may have to use one of the other five senses to see this. Going around and asking people in classes or in the hallways to see their pinky was a little off-putting but after a few seconds, they understood. I interviewed 25 students and out of those 25, 21 people had a dent or had differently shaped pinkys. Now yes, some people are born with different-looking fingers but, that was one of the first questions I asked everyone. I then asked everyone to either give an estimate of their screen time on their phone or pull up the screen time statistic on their phone. The average screen time per day was 6 hours and 42 minutes.
Now after interviewing people about their pinkies and how they look, some people got insecure about their pinkies realizing that they do have one or finally realizing that they are online a lot. Walking into a French 3 class, I asked Madame Hart about this, after she tested it, she continued to say, “Oh my gosh! Get out!” She was stunned and also a little mad that I pointed her out about her pinky.
Another teacher that I saw in the hallway, was Mrs. Long. I asked her the same thing and after she tried it out, he said “You are making me insecure about my fingers.” So many people are not aware of this issue as well as what is going on in how much a person spends on their phone in their day-to-day lives. So the simple answer would be yes.
