Trends tend to follow a pattern of quickly rising to popularity, and then falling off just as fast after a certain amount of time. Mobile games also seem to follow this process, and rely on the shortened attention spans of its users, and the constant need to fulfill boredom. Block Blast is the current fixation that has recently risen to popularity, and is an engaging yet mindless game. The concept of the game is relatively simple, but people have developed somewhat of an obsession with the game.
In Avonworth High School, students say that they constantly see people playing block blast, during open mods, in between tasks, or even during class. Freshman Hadley Reid said she was, “influenced by friends to download,” and ever since has been an avid player ever since with an impressive high score of 21572. Seniors Harmony Karwoski and Grace Bechtold agree and, “like the way the shapes fit together” and is, “a good, mindless distraction.” To other people the game can be frustrating because of the ads that play after each round, or because they can’t get a good score. Freshman Tria Witul says that, “ it’s super addicting, but not calming and rage inducing.” Despite the conflicting responses, students observe multiple people playing throughout the day. Mr Tuffiash said that “…the game isn’t anymore disruptive compared to others,” but he said that he observes many students playing in class. He also pointed out that the same company makes many other games with similar concepts, but for some reason this became the most popular.
There is also an unspoken competition between players trying to get the best score, and this adds another element of competitiveness that is an appealing factor for players. This specific game has already remained prominent for much longer than some other trends, so it will be interesting to see how long it will continue to play out, or what the next thing to take it place will be.
