The summer Olympics takes place once every four years, providing an opportunity for the best athletes to come together from all over the world to compete for a common goal. Not only does the Olympics promote camaraderie among athletes, but also for the spectators. Some people might have already forgotten about the games, because they might be focused on more current events. Even though the games took place over four months ago, the impact of the 2024 Paris Olympics undoubtedly impacted the year as a whole.
Each year it seems that the athletes continue getting faster, stronger, and better every year even when we don’t think it is possible. To the average person, what the athletes are capable of is astounding, which is a driving factor to the massive audiences full of spectators both in person and on their TVs from all over the world. Sometimes it’s hard to connect with people when there is a language barrier or large distances, but the spectacle of the Olympics provides a common factor physically and emotionally. This alone positively impacted 2024, after a series of negative events that unfortunately became the focus.
This year’s Summer Olympics brought a new set of standards for all future Olympic hosts. In collaboration with the International Olympic Committee, French representatives have brought forward new standards for economic stability, social and environmental sustainability, and international standards. They have put these in place to better future Olympic events, and create a better environment for future games.
The 2024 Summer Olympics has also brought forth new opportunities for women and vulnerable groups. These new opportunities give people the chance to try something new and inspire confidence in young people. Whether these opportunities come from letting young girls try sports that are usually male-dominated, or organizing tournaments for refugees so they can integrate and bond, no one can deny the positive promotion events like these have on young people’s lives. As viewers see what Paris has organized, hopefully, this will inspire other countries to carry on traditions like these.
The Olympics sometimes bring along challenges because it is such a massive event. This year there was a discrepancy between several gymnasts, about who was the rightful winner of the bronze medal. American gymnast Jordan Chiles received the bronze medal initially for her performance on the floor exercise after her coach submitted an appeal to her score, allowing her to take 3rd place. Then in outrage, the Romanian coach pointed out that the appeal was submitted after the 60 second time limit, and Jordan’s score was reverted. This put her back in 5th place, and the bronze medal was awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. This is a reflection of how the Olympics creates a competitive environment that can be for both the better and worse, but ultimately leaving an impact on the year as a whole.
