Ryan Ging is the Detective Sergeant of the Ohio Township Police Department. On January 23, 2025, I interviewed him on his schooling experience and how he got to where he is today as well as some get-to-know-you questions.
Avonews: Where did you go to school?
Detective Sergeant Ging: “K-12, I went to Avonworth. I went to Robert Morris University for business and later went into the police academy to become a police officer.”
Avonews: Did you have any school activities?
Detective Sergeant Ging: “Growing up I was a baseball player but later quit due to an injury. In high school, I was a part of the marching band, first starting on the saxophone and later the electric guitar. My friends and I started a ‘band’ and would cover popular songs at the time.”
Avonews: Did you ever have an idea about going into the music business due to your background? (follow-up question)
Detective Sergeant Ging: “Not necessarily. I always liked playing and listening to music but never really thought about having a career in the music business.”
Avonews: Did you know what you wanted to do after high school when you were growing up?
Detective Sergeant Ging: “I sort of had an idea of what I wanted to do but wasn’t necessarily set on what exactly I wanted to do. I always liked the idea of becoming a first responder but I didn’t know exactly what part. I did go to college for business but later decided on going into the police academy.”
Avonews: Where did you start with your first responder carrier?
Detective Sergeant Ging: “I first started as an EMT which is an emergency medical technician which is where I met my wife. At the same time, I was also a 911 operator also known as someone who would answer 911 phone calls. Yet at the same time, I was also a volunteer firefighter for Ohio Township.”
Avonews: Where did your police career start from there?
Detective Sergeant Ging: “I was on a major fire call one morning. There was so much going on. There were police, fire, and EMS. I had already been a firefighter for years and was taking over a certain area during that call. We were there for hours trying to get the fire out. After we finished, the police chief at the time came up to me and offered me a job and that is when I went off to the police academy to be able to fully accept the job.”
Avonews: How long have you been known as “Detective Sergeant Ging?”
Detective Sergeant Ging: “I have been the detective for 7 years and most recently been known as Detective Sergeant since January 1, 2025.”
Avonews: What advice do you have for aspiring police officers?
Detective Sergeant Ging: “I would do it. You see a lot of negatives in the media but honestly, it’s not true. I enjoy my job and I would convince others to do it for your community. It is very stressful but again, I like my job very much. There is a lot of work that goes into it but if you are determined and hard-working, I would do it.”
