AHS students found themselves at home to end April and start May in 2025. Not virtual days, not a pandemic – completely closed. An intense storm brought wind damage, downing trees, disrupting power for over 140,000 at one point after Tuesday afternoon’s storm. Here are a few reflections from students, in summaries and in direct quotations, as they navigated a few hours, a day, or days without school and without power in their house.
Clementine Dutot-Lucs (10): Didn’t lose power at all but has friends who did, and was driving when the storm hit. Didn’t face any problems herself, but had a lot of friends who still didn’t have power as of Friday and were having a hard time.
Izzy Pecosh (10): Lost power until Friday afternoon, and was majorly inconvenienced. She went to the library downtown on the days off to do her homework, especially Positive Chemistry for Honors Chemistry, because she had no internet at home. She read two books and hung out with her brothers when school was off with her free time.
Q: Has the power outage affected your sleep at all?
Izzy: “Instead of going to bed at midnight, I went to bed at like ten. Maybe that’s why I’m crashing out, I’m getting too much sleep.”
Nina Velisaris (10): Only lost power for a few hours, but went to her friend’s house on the days off. She had a lot of trouble sleeping because she couldn’t use her fan, and it was hot. She took advantage of the nice weather on the days off and tanned. She also worked on Positive Chemistry for Honors Chemistry
Bea Laurenson (10): Only lost power for a few hours, but it didn’t bother her very much. She went out to eat and tanned on the two days off from school.

Ellie Studebaker (10): Lost power for a few hours and got it back quickly, wasn’t too affected by the outage
