The results shifted the positions into new hands: class officers for the Class of 2027 are now Harrison McAfee as President, Santiago Angelelli as Vice President, with Izzy Pecosh as Secretary and Elena Van Mater as Treasurer as returning officers.
One such pair of candidates was Poppy Wagers and Alexa Graves, who ran for President and Vice President, respectively. “Me and Poppy want to raise money for our class and just help our class. We have some fun activity ideas and we want to just help our school” said Alexa Graves when asked why she and Poppy wanted to run. “We’re happy for whoever wins, and we just want to have a great school year.”
The incumbents, Sydney Stahl as President and Manal Shafiq as Vice President, expressed their views about their new competition. “I’d say that it’s just people wanting the title,” said Sydney. She added that “People are coming in with new ideas but aren’t quite sure what the workload will be.” Manal seconded Sydney’s thoughts on the new candidates: “If you wanted to run, why didn’t you run last year, when no one ran against us? The people that are running now are just doing it for clout.”
To win over voters, many candidates distributed incentives to the student body in the form of cookies and brownies. Evie Mathie expressed her support for the delicacies. “I received one from Manal. I think it’s a really good idea, because I think it definitely improves voting. I think a lot of people want to vote for people if they get them food because people like food.” Sally Nalevanko shared those opinions. “Yes, I did receive a sweet treat, it was from Manal. I think handing out sweet treats is a good idea. It gets people to like you and creates some incentive.”
Fellow juniors shared their thoughts on the election as a whole: “I think there’s clearly competition, and that’s what people find more interesting,” said Greta Christof before continuing. “They’re definitely doing more, making more upscale videos. They’re making a bigger deal out of it because now it’s about senior year.” Ruby MacKenzie shared a sentiment that carried across the viewpoints of many juniors. “It somewhat matters to me because I want to have a good senior year.”
The voting for Secretary and Treasurer was a far calmer ordeal. Previous Secretary, Izzy Pecosh, had only one opponent, Cadence Kuretich, and previous Treasurer, Elena VanMater, ran unopposed.
Moving forward, the new President and Vice President have the responsibility to match their campaign ideas with the reality of a budget and expectations.
