This fall golf season, as per usual in the 2020’s, Avonworth’s boys showcased plenty of impressive talent and spirit. October 9th, the team competed for a 2A section championship. The roster is dominated by sophomore studs and greatly supported by senior talents. Sophomore Chase Hogan stood out this season’s closing, especially, with back-to-back rounds of 83 and 77 at Penn State’s par-72 layout.
Penn State hosts two well-maintained, championship-level golf courses known for their smooth terrain, strategic bunkers, and layouts that challenge players of every skill level. A four-star course seriously seems like a breeze for chase, signaling great potential at future venues.
Chase secured himself a position in the 2a PIAA tournament on Penn State’s white course, where he shot 11 over par in his first round and just 5 over in his second round, scoring a 160 along with 4 others, finishing him in 44th. The team’s WPIAL final was played earlier this October, and the boys secured third place, an upgrade from the most recent team’s 6th place in 2023 3a.
Chase cut 6 strokes his second time around; he has the potential to come back and place way higher. He showed great improvement and consistency across 36 holes, averaging about 4 strokes per hole with particularly steady play to finish the second round off. These numbers highlight Chase as one of Avonworth’s most promising undergraduates as the team looks forward to the next season and tougher play.
Practice will continue on challenging and fun courses, such as Shannopin Country Club. A community outing was held at the Reserve Run golf course to bring together students, the community, and families for friendly competition. Pizza and a raffle for everybody wasn’t the only prize; the first- and second-place teams were also awarded a cash prize. The question now is how Avonworth’s young players prepare to take charge next season and keep their momentum.
