The Lopes entered as #1 and ended the same way, hoisting up the 3a district 7 championship title for the 2nd straight year at Acresure Stadium on Saturday, November 22nd, after defeating Imani Christian Academy 30-6.
During their run in the WPIAL playoffs, they went through the 8 seed Freeport beating them 56-7 at home. Then, playing North Catholic at North Allegheny, they beat them 44-24. At last, they stepped into Acresure Stadium for the fourth consecutive year, beating Imani Christian Academy 30-6 and winning back-to-back 3A WPIAL championships.
This year’s team came into the season with a chip on their shoulder after a heart-crushing 36-33 overtime loss last year in the state final vs Northwestern Lehigh. So this team wanted to prove a point this season, and a point they did. Scoring a total of 535 points and allowing only 127 points, the most coming to North Catholic in the semifinals of the WPIAL playoff.
The WPIAL final was no exception to that, even though many thought it might be with the start the Lopes had. Imani went three and out punting the ball to the Lopes, where it bounced and hit Cooper Scharding, allowing Imani to recover it and gain possession of the ball. Avonworth then forced another three and out, and then themselves going three and out, putting Imani on the about 15-yard line. Where Romelo Harris comes down on the screen pass and intercepts the ball for a pick six putting the Lopes up 7-0.
From there, the game kept momentum in the Lopes favor, with a ball control focused running attack that chewed up time and a defense that took advantage of a lead and relentlessly pressured opposing quarterback Gabe Jenkins. The final score was 30-6.
