Early Sunday Afternoon, January 25th, Superintendent Hadley announced via e-mail and phone call about a shift to virtual schooling for Monday and Tuesday.
After further consideration, the district notified the community about a third consecutive day of virtual school. The combination of extreme cold, continued difficult road conditions, and additional snowfall and blowing snow were listed as key factors for the shift to virtual mid-week.
Dear Avonworth School Community,
Avonworth School District will implement another Remote Learning Day tomorrow, Wednesday, January 28, 2026. All district campuses and buildings will remain closed through Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
This decision was made considering the extreme cold forecast for tomorrow morning, current road conditions, and the additional snowfall/ snow blowing that occurred today.
While conditions have improved in some areas, several roads remain unsafe for bus travel. This additional remote learning day allows municipalities time to continue clearing roads. It also gives our facility team extra time to continue clearing snow on each campus, ensuring everyone’s safety.
As a reminder, remote learning days follow a two-hour delayed start schedule:
Avonworth Middle School (AMS) and Avonworth High School (AHS): 10:00 AM.
Avonworth Primary Center (APC) and Avonworth Elementary School (AES): 11:00 AM.
Information regarding school closings, delays, and schedule changes is always available on the District website.
All decisions to delay school or shift to remote learning are made with the safety of our students as the top priority. We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and flexibility.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey M. Hadley, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Around 2 PM Wednesday, the district notified community members about the return to school on Thursday as well as potential plans on Friday:
Dear Avonworth School Community,
This communication will outline the current plan for the remainder of the week.
The Avonworth School District will have a two-hour delay on Thursday, January 29, due to a cold-weather advisory and to allow bus drivers to navigate earlier routes with better visibility as they approach bus stops.
Our bus company, First Student, drove bus routes again today to evaluate accessibility. They reported a noticeable improvement over yesterday and can now access all stops. I’d like to thank them for the effort they have put in to ensure we can safely transport our students to school.
Although air temperatures are forecast to be extremely cold for Friday, it does not appear that wind will be a factor. We will monitor conditions and may take the same approach, with a delay on Friday, to support transportation. Our current plan is to hold in-person instruction on Friday. A message will be sent tomorrow afternoon to confirm the official plan for Friday.
Lastly, our buildings and grounds staff and custodians have done a tremendous job preparing our campuses. We will open the buildings at 3:00 PM this afternoon (Jan. 28) for practices. Coaches or directors will communicate directly with students concerning these activities.
Here is a look at campus on Wednesday morning, January 28th, after two full days of plowing from Head of Groundskeeping and Maintenance Mr. Colamarino and the rest of the maintenance staff:

One week into the 2nd semester, students have split their time between campus for three days and virtual school in their homes for the next three.
Here’s a look at a few of the different environments when school shifted to virtual starting on Monday, January 26th:

The Weather Channel started naming winter storms in 2012, but official agencies like the National Weather Service do not. The January 2026 storm was named Fern by the Weather Channel – https://weather.com/news/weather/news/2026-01-25-live-updates-january-25-winter-storm-fern
Nationwide, over 50 people have died as a result of this storm – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_2026_North_American_winter_storm
