The cheerleaders have been cheering for our sports teams all year. One of the cheerleaders, Lexi Mannion (’25) reflected on this season
Are you in the playoffs? How’s it going?
“We are currently cheering on our boys and girls basketball teams during their playoff run! It is going really well so far, playoffs are the most fun games to cheer because it is win or go home. We support our teams either way and it is definitely really fun”
Largest highlight to you and largest challenge to take on next season
“The largest highlight for me is watching my seniors grow so much this year. From their junior year last year, I have watched them become very strong leaders and team players. They always want the best for us and always strive to make us look the best. The largest challenge is trying to take on this role myself next year. Taking a leadership role is challenging but now that I know that some of my best friends can do it successfully, I can too.”
What can Avonews cover about Winter Cheer – any new stunts, routines, anything else?
“Winter cheer is slowly coming to an end as our basketball teams reach playoffs. It has been a long year including football and basketball seasons. Now, that it is coming to an end we have been working on the last concluding routines. For example, we have a new “Pink Friday Girls” dance that will eventually be seen at a pep rally but for now it can be seen at varsity games. It was a challenging dance for our team at the end of the season but we made it work and it definitely prepared us for next season.”
The school saw the cheer squad at the Winter Pep Rally – anything new or different in your performance at that rally? Anything students should know?
“Students should know that as our 23-24 season is ending the new season is approaching very quickly. As cheerleaders, we really do not get a break. Tryouts are in April usually and practices start over the summer. This also means that many of our senior cheerleaders are tying out for college cheer in late March-early April. Cheer in college is a struggle and many of our alumni have not continued cheering because it is so hard. You do not get scouted but instead you tryout for any team. Any college cheer team is very challenging to make because of the skills needed. Many of our seniors are trying out for college cheer which is really good and we cant wait to see where they go in the future! As for our 24-25 season tryouts are super soon where they are announcing captains and the new cheer team for my senior year of cheer.”
This season for cheer, pictured above at a December pep rally, has been a huge success. We look forward to the next season to see what new things the cheerleaders have in store.
