When you think of social media, there are hundreds of different apps, and maybe you even think of a trend or meme that has stuck with you.
Personally, the first thing that comes to our minds is TikTok. We both spend an extensive amount of time on the app, and it can sometimes become our form of communication even if we’re sitting right next to each other. TikTok has its highs and lows, and every year, it seems to be getting chanced and threatened with being banned.
In the past, TikTok trends consisted of simple dances, do-it-yourself ideas, or TikTok transitions. While these are still around, they used to be more prominent. In 2024, TikTok experienced more get ready with me videos, fit checks, and brain rot. Most of these trends were targeted at younger audiences, like ourselves, but they also reached older audiences, like millennials. A lot of trends formed around pop cultures, such as Charli XCX’s new album, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, and the Roblox game, dress to impress.
Get Ready with Me TikToks are used to show people’s everyday routines and lifestyles. Typically people talk about their personal lives while doing their skincare or makeup routines. These are entertaining to watch and listen to and they give people skincare or makeup recommendations as well.
Fit checks show people’s everyday outfits and are used to give fashion advice to viewers. In early 2024 there was a trend called the “Utah boy fit check” which originated with a Utah boy showing off his outfit while jumping and spinning in the air. Many other people copied his video and it turned into a trend.
Brain rot social media ideas that have no intellectual meaning. It’s tied to excessive screen time and meaningless words or phrases.
With TikTok trends come TikTok cancellations; there were quite a few this year. The Cancelled podcast co-host Brooke Schofield not only exposed her ex-boyfriend, Clinton Kane but also had old racist Tweets from Brooke resurfaced. Not only were their abusive relationships and racism, but 2024 also got to see pedophiles get exposed and out-of-touch inferences get attacked.
Cody Ko, known for his successful YouTube channel that started on 30 May 2014, was accused of sexually assaulting minor Tana Mongeau who at the time was 17, while Cody Ko was 25. Cody Ko did not make any apology or respond to the cancellation at all.
On the other side of cancellation was TikTok creator Hailey Bailey who at the Met Gala was wearing a Marie Antoinette look and put an audio over it that said “Let them eat cake.” The problem that everyone had with this is that people all over the world were starving while she was at an expensive, exclusive event in an expensive dress. The TikTok left an out-of-touch message to everyone else.
2024 TikTok consisted of a lot of diverse trends and people that shaped the platform throughout the year.
