Having a 2-0 record before section games even begin is a great way to start out a basketball season. An even better way is to have a trophy to go along with that record. This was the case for the Lady Lopes basketball team at the tip off tournament the Brownsville Falcons hosted on Friday, December 9th.
The team had an early dismissal from school for the two hour long bus ride out to Brownsville to play McGuffey. After four eight-minute quarters, the girls took a 46-24 win and rode home thinking about the next game- supposed to be much more challenging.
The following Saturday, the Lady Lopes once again loaded the bus and traveled to play the hosts of the tournament- Brownsville. This game was not as easily won. In the first few minutes, the Falcons were up by two, and this back-and-forth continued for the rest of the half. At halftime, the two teams were tied 22-22. For the third quarter, the Lopes came back and immediately scored six points. This streak continued for the rest of the game. At the end of it, Avonworth had 57 and Brownsville 43. Captains Katie Gould, Hunter Robinson, and Nicole Costa accepted the first place trophy, and Hunter was also awarded the MVP prize for the entire tournament.

As the section games approach, the girls hope to keep up this winning streak and continue to improve.
