So far this season, the girl’s soccer team has a section record of 6-3, with an impressive overall record of 8-3. Last year, the girls finished the season with an overall record of 11-6-3. This year the girls have played Brentworth, Charleroi, North Hills, Freedom (twice), Steel Valley, South Allegheny, Beaver, Eden, Keystone Oaks, Mohawk, and Quaker Valley. They also participated in the Hannah Milbert Memorial Cup, in which they placed second to North Hills. In the weeks to come, they are scheduled to play Steel Valley (2nd time), South Allegheny (2nd time), Greenburg CC, Keystone Oaks (2nd time), Quaker Valley (2nd time), and then they will finish up their regular season by playing Sewickley Academy on October 18.
Over Labor Day weekend, Avonworth Soccer Boosters hosted the annual Lopes Cup tournament at Lenzer Field. But this year, the tournament had a new name and a very special dedication. The Hannah Milbert Memorial Cup is now the title of the tournament, and the teams competed in her memory. Before games on the first day, a moment of silence was held after a short speech was given about her legacy. It was emotional for the girls team, but according to players, they were able to put their feelings aside when game time came. The Avonworth boys placed first in their side of the tournament, and the Lady Lopes in second after a very competitive game with North Hills.
Since the devastating loss of Hannah, sophomore Miranda Chrvala has stepped up to fill the goalie position.
The team also lost 4 seniors this past year. Since all four girls started varsity, this had a huge impact on the team. With new positions open, the underclassmen had to step up and perform for the team to be successful during the 2017 season.
