Softball and track practice were canceled as a winter snowstorm blanketed the skies on the first day of spring, Tuesday, March 20, 2018.
The next morning, the district followed over one hundred other local districts and first delayed before canceling school due to this winter storm.
With just three school days left until Spring Break, students can absorb a 2-hour delay without any change in scheduled days off next week. A cancellation would lead to an additional day taken away from next week’s break. Students would have to report for a full day of classes on Monday, March 26th. Cancellations on January 5th and February 7th removed Monday, April 2 and Friday, April 27th, which were originally scheduled as days off.
UPDATE: The board voted on March 21 to retain the vacation day on Monday, March 26th for students. Instead, teachers will report for professional development. A memo was sent through Edline on Wednesday evening, see the full copy below.
On Tuesday, as the snow started to fall, students were generally supportive of any surprise time off, though some wanted a full week of vacation starting next Monday.
“I wouldn’t really like it because of {losing one day from} spring break” said senior Julia Wimer. “I’d be happy, even if they take off spring break I’m still not coming.” said senior Naudia Ellis.

The Winter Weather Advisory issued for today states “FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET UNTIL 5 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON, TRANSITIONING TO SNOW. FOR ACCUMULATING SNOW, FROM 8 PM THIS EVENING TO 8 PM EDT WEDNESDAY, WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW AFTER 3 AM”
