The baseball team came into the season with the ranking of number two.
With high expectations coming in, it was championship or bust for the team. They finished the year with a 16-5 record. ,seeded seventh going into the WPIAl playoffs.
In the first round of the playoffs they rolled Brownsville 17-2, which was a nice part of the playoffs getting revenge on Brownsville for last year loss in the WPIAl championship to them.
Then they moved on to the second round to where they unfortunately lost 7-2 to Serra Catholic. A bright side of the loss was future Youngstown State baseball player Turner Grau hitting a homerun to cap off his baseball career. He said “it was a bittersweet feeling but it was nice to run around the bases one last time and just take it in. a moment i’ll never forget”.
After such a high expectation going into this season I asked some juniors going into their senior year on the team what they need to do to build off this season and try to win it next year. Jax Miller said “Live in the moment” so you don’t get caught up in ranks or backlash so when it comes time to perform you are ready. Park Penrod said “Personally I need to be a leader since I am going to one of the top players next year. I also need to play my best baseball since this is my last year ”. Regarding what the team needs to do, he said “As a team it’s important that we focus on fundamentals and play loose because there are only 2-3 returning starters so our team will be young and not pile a ton of stress on the underclassmen”.
