The bulletin board in the orange and yellow hallway always has something on it that interests kids slowly getting to class, roaming for friends, or pacing the halls to avoid whatever they are supposed to do in class. Recently, post-it-notes have appeared on the board. Most of these notes have quotes on them from Mr. Rogers saying uplifting phrases like, “Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else.” or “There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.” Though, some of the post-it-notes have phrases that made up by the people who made them. One of these notes says, “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says, ‘I’m possible.’” Other notes have quotes from unknown people.
The board was created by Mrs. Reagle’s Service Learning Class and is also decorated with colored in sweat-shirt paper cut-outs that look like the sweat-shirt that Mr. Rogers used to wear in every episode of his show. While the board celebrates Mr. Rogers with the sweater theme, it also makes twice about the events in our lives and how we react to them.
Sophomore Taea Schriefer also added that the class contributed some original sayings or sayings from other speakers or figures. “We did a few but, ‘Peace means far more than the opposite of war’ was one of the quotes I chose.”
“It is a powerful statement that can be put on just the arguments throughout life. Peace is something you work for and is created through mutual respect.”
Taea also hinted at why they chose Mr. Rogers as the main character of the board. “Different things inspire people, but a lot of quotes from someone practically everyone knows can be the most impactful to the community. Yes, we planned for it to be something anyone can read. It serves its purpose anytime anyone reads a quote.” This also gives us the purpose of the board. It’s supposed to inspire us when we read a quote from the board. They definitely could reach their goal with the effort they put in.
