This year has been chaotic and soon it will be time to vote, but who should we all vote for? Well, everyone is going to have different opinions, but there’s no doubt that we all want this pandemic to be over as fast as possible. Each candidate on the PA ballot for President has their own views on the virus and how to get rid of it.
Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate, has a few ideas on how to handle COVID. First, he would create a national emergency response that would protect frontline workers and minimizes the spread of the virus. Then he would make sure that there was a way for the economy to stay stable but at the same time, help families and small businesses. He would also make masks mandatory in public. Finally, he would make something called the “COVID-19 Racial and Ethnic Disparities Task Force” which would help racial and ethnic communities, which have disproportionately been affected by the pandemic.
Donald Trump, the Republican candidate and the current president, has chosen to rest most of the COVID responsibilities on the states. Early on, Trump cut off entry from China in order to try and keep the transmissions low, however, the numbers kept growing and most states eventually decided to put its citizens into quarantine. At first, Trump questioned masks, but then he began to wear them and even encourage the use of them in June. This summer, he urged schools to re-open. All in all, it doesn’t look like he has much of a plan. The president’s opinions on the pandemic have hopped all over the place. However, he has passed emergency spending bills in order to help create a vaccine and he established a “COVID-19 Task Force”. He plans to finish the vaccine by the end of this year and to return back to normal next year. Additionally, he hopes to refill stockpiles and prepare future administrations for the next pandemics. His responses are confusing and intriguing, but he has helped the states out and even some other countries.
Jo Jorgansen, the Libertarian candidate, believes that the government handled it poorly. She believes that Trump should have removed FDA obstacles in order to have more testing done. Jorgansen would have encouraged people, even without symptoms, to get tested because you can have COVID even if you have no symptoms. She believes that if we tested more we would have gotten the virus under control a lot faster.
Howie Hawkins is the Green Party Candidate and he would do things very differently from Trump. He said that he would create a Coronavirus relief package with Medicare to pay for Covid tests and treatments, he would create a plan to distribute medical supplies throughout the Country, and a Quarantine Program to safely reopen the economy. He would also give $2,000 a month to anyone over the age of 16 and $500, in total, for each child. He would also suspend student loan payments with %0 interest accumulation. He has a huge plan for what he wants to do and there’s more than what I just listed!
All of these candidates have very detailed plans for dealing with the Coronavirus and they’re all drastically different. These candidates are all very prepared and ready to jump into the presidential role and we only have to wait a couple of months to find out who it is. If you’re old enough, please vote and if you’re not- remind those that can!
