The Avonworth Antelopes football team is currently 4-1 in the 2021-2022 season. They started the season with 3 straight wins against Summit Acadamy, Apollo-Ridge, and Freeport. They outscored their opponents in the first three games 116 – 21.
In their 4th game, they faced off against the Vikings from Sto-Rox. It was a close game with many controversial calls that ended up in the Viking’s favor with a score of 19-16. The next week the Lopes hosted South Side. The Lopes came out with the 12-7 win to get their record to 4-1.
With only the loss of 5 seniors that graduated in the class of 2021 the Lopes this year have a highly talented and experienced team. With this experienced team there comes a lot of underclassmen. We asked freshman Anthony Cetti what it was like as a freshman on the team and how the season is going so far. He told us “It’s going pretty good, there are a lot of role models and people to look up to and they treat us well and stuff like that. The season is going good all varsity wins besides one and we’ve won all JV games”
During the 2020-2021 football season the freshmen only had the chance to play 6 varsity games. This meant that this will be their first full season on varsity. We asked Harrison Holloway, a current sophomore, “I feel like it’s going well, we just need to clean up some things and not be as sloppy, and I see us going pretty far.” We also interviewed sophomore Zack Dimtroff, he told us “I think we are off to a good start, and then our last game wasn’t going so well so we got a stern talking to. I now think we are prepared to bounce back during this next game.”
The Lopes have had a pretty difficult schedule this year with many really good opponents. This schedule also included many rival teams and bigger schools that should be challenging for the Lopes. This is what Athletic Director Andrea Patton had to say about what went into creating the schedule, “The WPIAL which we are a part of creates our section schedule for us so we don’t have as much control over that piece as we do none section schedule. So none section schedules, typically my process is I like to meet more of the coaches to understand what number one their teams are gonna look like in the upcoming years and what their strengths and weaknesses are. So when making the schedule you want to balance it. You don’t wanna play teams that are way too easy and you don’t wanna play teams that are way too hard.”
Avonworth will have a big upcoming home game against conference rivals Keystone Oaks Friday night at Lenzner Field. This is a big game for the Lopes as 2 losses will affect their playoff chances and seeding.
