On September 13th, Nintendo had a 40-minute-long presentation illustrating what new games are coming soon to the Nintendo Switch. Two of them stood out as some of the most groundbreaking and influential games of the future.
Let’s talk about the one that was least expected. Pikmin is a real-time strategy and puzzle game, based around growing little sentient plants called Pikmin and using them to do certain things by growing your farm. Pikmin hasn’t gotten a game on console since the beginning of the Wii U era, and fans have been asking for the fourth installment for a while now. And near the middle of the Nintendo Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto came to showcase Pikmin 4. Fans on Twitter went ecstatic. Twitter user Scruffy said that “I’m so curious what it will be like; it already looks bigger than Pikmin 3, and I love the tall manmade objects in the scene. I’m so excited that it’s been confirmed!!!”
Pikmin 4 didn’t have a lot of information about it, other than that it’s releasing in 2023. Fans can predict this game come somewhere in the Spring-Summer months, though video games can be delayed a significant amount, so don’t hold your breath.
The other game to be announced was a Zelda game. For Zelda fans, the sequel was long awaited. The latest release, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, won an absurd amount of awards and is currently named one of the greatest video games of all time. So when the sequel was announced, people were very excited for the next game that would be bigger than its predecessor.
But due to COVID-19, crunching, and other factors, the game was delayed multiple times. It was supposed to be coming out in late 2021, and here we are in mid-late 2022, waiting for news about the high expectations Zelda game.
Well, on September 13th’s Nintendo Direct, we finally got some good news.
The game got its own section at the end of the Nintendo Direct, and we finally got to see gameplay footage of this new game. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is now its new name, instead of the name Breath of the Wild 2 by some speculators. The game is set to release on May 12th, 2022.
Nintendo is now receiving some heat for this, however. The Nintendo UK account delayed their showing of the Nintendo Direct in honor of the Queen’s death:
Some speculate that the name of the Zelda title may have played a role in this. The name, “Tears of the Kingdom” according to Kotaku, “would’ve hit a sour note with those who are mourning last week’s reminder that royalty, despite what they want you to think, are mere mortals.”
Either way, the future looks bright for Nintendo. Along with free DLC for Mario Strikers, another set of courses in Mario Kart, the recent release of Splatoon 3, and all the other games in the Direct, Nintendo is expected to do very well in the coming months, and there are no signs of stopping for them in the foreseeable future.
