Outside of a lopsided 7-2 loss to Quaker Valley, AHS Hockey is 5-1 with 2 wins against Wheeling Park, along with single game defeats of Moon, Beaver, and North Hills. The Antelopes have 35 goals for and 24 goals against and is in first place in Class A gold.
Senior Braeden Penrose leads the team as the captain. Home alternates are seniors Dylan Tedys and Avery Leffler, while juniors are the away alternates, Austin Gatti and Jake Seifarth. Sophomore Conor Ralston currently leads the team in points with 7 goals and 5 assists. Jake Seifarth plays a key role on the team, he plays both forward and defense when it is needed.
The team is freshman-heavy this year as there is always a freshman being called up for each game. They are playing a big role too as 5 different freshmen have tallied at least one point this season. Freshman Joey Moore even has 10 goals, most on the team.
The hockey team isn’t currently sponsored by the school. Athletic Director Ms. Patton spoke on the sponsorship and said,” They are likely to not become affiliated with the school because of how expensive the sport is. Buying ice time and equipment costs a lot of money.” She also spoke on how the sport can bring in more spectators to each game, “ Social media and communication around the school is probably the best way for the team to get out and be noticed. The main issue is the late time of the games”
Hockey season stretches from October through February, and a quarter of the way through the season, scoring depth will be a key for continued success.
