On Monday, October 31st, Physical Education teacher Mr. Coffin shared positive news with the staff:
Please join me in congratulating Luke Behon and Nate Neuherz for qualifying for the Bass Nation NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!
They have come so close for the past few years and finally got over the hump!!
Believe it or not, this can lead to scholarship opportunities for them.
I am super proud of them and even happier they will be representing Avonworth at nationals!!
Nate and Luke answered a few questions for Avonews Online staff via email about their leadup to this competition:
We first started fishing with the school going into 9th grade when Mr.Coffin started the Bass Club.We found out about the Bass club when most of our friends heard from Mr. Coffin that he was starting it.We fish an assortment of tournaments all around the state. We fish local lakes and rivers mostly but have traveled for some.Most of the teams that fish the High School level come from all over the state. Many students just fish the tournaments themselves without connection to a school.It’s pretty cool to have 3 teams just from Avonworth.We have both been fishing since we were young, but started competitively fishing in 9th.
Most scholarships come from reaching out to colleges. We haven’t looked into them yet as we are not sure as of where we are going but competing at the National level is a great way to get out there and present ourselves to colleges.
{Local students have earned scholarships recently – one from Hampton and one from Central Catholic}
