During the year of 2022, people all over the world got to experience a mix of films with some being cinematic masterpieces and others being unfortunately disappointing. From Top Gun: Maverick to Minions: The Rise of Gru, there were over 150 movies that were released this past year with many of them passing the $750,000,000 mark at the worldwide box office. With the year coming to an end, here are the results for the top 5 2022 films according to the worldwide box office.
5. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – $787,135,551
Back in 2020, the world lost a king. Chadwick Boseman, the actor who portrayed the well-known Marvel Comics character Black Panther, sadly died of Colon cancer on August 28, 2020. This left the Marvel community shocked and confused about what was going to happen with the character and the story. In May 2021, Marvel announced the name of their sequel to Black Panther titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This instantly arose questions about what would happen to the beloved character. When I went to watch the film on opening night, all of those questions were answered. The addition of new characters and unique plotlines made it stand out against the other Marvel projects that were released earlier this year. Out of all the superhero movies that came out in 2022, this was my favorite and I can’t wait for the next time that Black Panther returns to the big screen.
4. Minions: The Rise of Gru – $939,433,210
Originally, Minions: The Rise of Gru was supposed to release back in July of 2020, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was pushed back until July of 2021. This release was also pushed back, resulting in the film finally coming to theaters in July of 2022. When the film debuted, it instantly became a meme. Large groups of people would show up to the film, all while wearing suits. This quickly became a viral trend all across social media, mainly TikTok. Once more people became aware of this worldwide phenomenon, the suit-wearing became even more popular. The trend eventually got so out of hand that movie theaters began banning wearing suits to the film and kicking people out if they did. Yes, while many did go to see the film because it looked like a good family or children’s movie, the real reason that it is ranked top 4 out of the top 5 on the list is because of the insane number of people going to see it just for the meme.
3. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – $955,775,804
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was one of those films that either had you going “wow” or “oh.” For me, this film had me going “oh.” The performances done by some of the actors, made this movie, at times, hard to watch and enjoy. When I went to go see the film, I was really excited to see what Marvel would bring to the table and if there would be anything new to come from it. While there were new characters introduced and future projects that could be potentially set up from this one, none of it really stood out to me. The returning characters, alongside the new characters, all seemed too bland. The thing I did like about this film was the visuals. Most of the visuals were absolutely stunning. The effects of the magic and chaos really brought parts of it to life. However, a movie can’t solely rely on how eye-appealing it is. A movie also has to have a good plot and engaging characters to make it worth watching. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, unfortunately, just didn’t do it for me.
2. Jurassic World: Dominion – $1,001,136,080
2022 was definitely centered around nostalgia for many of its films, with Jurassic World: Dominion being one of them. In the film, actors: Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, and Laura Dern return to play their roles: Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, and Ellie Sattler one last time. This brought many fans of the original Jurassic Park series back to the theaters to see what would happen to the beloved characters. Of course, fans of the more current Jurassic World series also bought their tickets to see how the third film of the series would play out. With both generations of “Jurassic lovers” going to see the film, it’s no wonder why it made as much as it did.
1. Top Gun: Maverick – $1,488,732,821
I don’t think that many people will be surprised to hear that Top Gun: Maverick was the highest-grossing film of 2022. When the film was released, audiences loved it and critics claimed it to be better than the original. Everything from the acting, to the visuals, was absolutely incredible. The film featured returning actors such as Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, while also introducing newcomers like Miles Teller. The film took the action, dynamics, and overall speed of the first Top Gun movie and upgraded it 100% to produce an absolute masterpiece of a film that definitely deserves its spot as #1.
I had no idea that these movies generated this much money. I didn’t think they were that popular but u changed my mind. I would maybe do the top 10 because im sure there are some movies that came close.
