2022 was a great year for movies, films like Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere All at Once set new standards for films. However, 2023 might be able to match it. With a stacked lineup of films releasing this year, here are 10 movies I think will be great.
- Beau is Afraid
Beau is Afraid is an upcoming horror-comedy film directed by Ari Aster. With two films to his name – Hereditary and Midsommar – Ari Aster has become one of the top horror directors in recent years. This will be his first time diving into the comedy genre, while still staying true to what he is used to doing. And with a cast full of stars like Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Parker Posey, and upcoming actor Michael Gandolfini, it looks like we will have another great A24 horror film coming.
- Killers of the Flower Moon
Scorcese. That’s all that really needs to be said. One of the greatest directors of all time is teaming up with frequent collaborators Leonardo Dicaprio and Robert De Niro to give us an adaptation of David Grann’s book. Scorcese and crime go better together than basically anything else. So that alone should raise excitement.Â
Asteroid City is the upcoming Wes Anderson movie. Because it is a Wes Anderson movie the cast is stacked. Margot Robbie, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Willem Dafoe, Steve Carell… you get it. Wes Anderson has such a specific atmosphere to his films that makes it hard not to get excited.
- Infinity Pool
Infinity Pool is the new horror film from Brandon Cronenberg, son of legendary body-horror director David Cronenberg. With a cast featuring Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth, we should get some good performances. This movie looks to be scary, gory, and most of all weird.
- Next Goal Wins
Next Goal Wins is the new film from Taika Watiti, after a lackluster Thor film, he is now taking on what seems to be his own spin on Ted Lasso. This movie has been pushed back for years, and with various setbacks, I am a bit concerned. But when Watiti has full creative control, something good always comes out.
- Challengers
Challengers is the new Luca Guadagnino film, and for once it looks like we might get something light-hearted out of him. This reported tennis rom-com movie stars Zendaya. Guadagnino is one of the most unique directors making movies right now, and this has a completely different tone from the rest of his catalog, which makes me very excited.
Ridley Scott is known for making pretty big-scale movies. So a Napoleon bio-pic seems very fitting for him. With Joaquin Phoenix playing Napoleon, this director-actor combo seems very promising.
- Inside
Inside is the newest Willem Dafoe movie, and it looks to be quite thrilling. This film, which seems to be Willem in a penthouse by himself, seems to be intense and interesting. I’m not sure what direction this movie will take but one thing for sure is that I will be seeing it.
- Oppenheimer
Oppenheiemer is Christopher Nolans newest film. I like Nolan’s work the best when it is somewhat grounded (when I mean grounded I mean easy to understand). And this story drops his usual traits of mind-bending sci-fi for something a lot more real. The cast looks great and the premise seems very interesting. I also think the black and white color will look great.
- The Killer
The Killer, hopefully coming out this year, is David Fincher’s new film. Fincher is one of the most acclaimed crime directors of recent times. And with his new film, supposedly about a hitman seems to be one of the most promising crime films, and film of this year.
I thought this article was really informational. I had not heard of any of these movies before, but after reading I am looking forward to seeing all of them. The description of each movie gave enough information for me to know what it was about but still left me intrigued to learn more about them.
