When Avatar was released back in the year of 2009, it was instantly praised by critics and viewers. When it first came to theaters, there was nothing like it. The CGI was ahead of its time and the film did an outstanding job at the box office. The film holds the record for the highest-grossing film at the worldwide box office, making nearly $3 billion. I watched the film for the first time back in December with my family. To my amazement, I did not enjoy it. It could not hold my attention for the 2 hours and 42 minutes that it was. The amount of hype that this film has had me excited and eager to watch it. I understand why so many people love this movie but it was just not it for me.
When the announcement that Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel to the critically acclaimed film Avatar, would be released on December 16, 2022, my feelings were mixed. I knew that it would do well box office-wise, due to the insane amounts of popularity from the first film; however, considering how much of a letdown the first film was for me, I wasn’t so sure that I would enjoy it. The excitement for the film quickly spread across social media and earned $134 million within its opening weekend. Its popularity grew and grew, eventually becoming the second highest-grossing film of 2022. All of the five-star reviews intrigued me to go see it. Walking into the theater, my expectations were low. When the credits began to roll, I had a whole different mindset. Everything from the visuals to the story was absolutely incredible. Each scene was filled with beauty. Avatar: The Way of Water is superior to Avatar and is hands down one of the best sequels in cinematic history.
