Prior to the start of the season, Pitt was ranked 14 out of 15 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Jeff Capel/ACC years have been a struggle. 11-19 last season, and consistent bottom third finishes since 2018. No Pitt player received a single vote for the preseason Player of the Year or preseason Rookie of the Year. Despite the publics’ thoughts, Pitt had been working hard during the off-season and preseason. They are now sitting at 3rd in the ACC with a record of 11-4 overall and 4-0 in their conference. They hold a current 5 game-win streak. Miami holds the one spot as they have an overall of 13-1 and a conference record of 4-0.
Pitt’s most recent two victories have stood out the most thus far. On Friday, December 30th, They battled against UNC, who made it to the March Madness Championship in 2022. UNC is notoriously known for their skill in basketball as well as their other sports programs. Yet Pitt pulled the upset, 76-74. This win was posted all over social media, which caused surprising and supportive reactions because UNC was ranked higher than Pitt.
After the big win over UNC, Pitt went on to play Virginia, another great team this year. Another close game, another Pitt win, 68-65. This was the first time since 2011 that Pitt beat two teams ranked higher than them back to back. This is an incredible start and attracts more fans to the program this season.
