Students were treated to a medley of numbers from the 2023 spring musical, Grand Hotel, during Mod F on Monday, March 27th.
Students had an overall appreciation of the skill and work it might take to practice and perform a musical, as our reporters noted students in the crowd talking about a variety of topics, including how much work the cast would have to do to memorize lines. Some juniors appreciated seeing Zoli Eadie’s professionalism and succeed in singing and playing his role of the Baron, pictured above onstage with Mars Horigan.
Freshman were able to see Paxon Masters in action. Many knew his enthusiasm for musical theater but were finally seeing it in person. Paxon is pictured stage right front, in all black. A few students noted how his voice was really fit for musicals. Others appreciated the costume design, feeling like they were really watching a story in the 1920’s, including freshman Lucy Myers pictured below in her character’s flapper hairstyle and costume.
Director Mrs. Frauenholz speaks to the 9-12 audience, filling the auditorium, before Myers performs a solo number at the assembly. This is the last year before renovations start at the high school. In two years, the auditorium will have a new stage, new seats, and other changes.
While there was appreciation, many students wished the selection was more like last year’s more comic The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Members of the cast and crew visited Journalism 1 on Friday, Mod H, to answer questions and share perspectives leading up to opening night. Below is a transcript.
“How much time do you spend rehearsing?”
“For a few months we go a few days a week. And then when we start to get closer to the musical we start to do more rehearsals. But when we get within a month it is 6 days a week.” said Junior Alex Fisher and Sophomore Emma Noss.
“Since the musical was earlier this year, did you start rehearsing earlier too? Or did you get the same amount of time as last year?”
“We didn’t get any more time to rehearse than we did last year. It was the same. It was really stressful to pack all of the rehearsals in because it was such a short amount of time.” responded Emma Noss
“Why do you do the musical?”
The general response was that they loved musicals since they were young and the musical is a place for people like us to express our selves in a good environment and we feel like its home because we are with people we love and get to do something that we all love.
A few students who attended the performances also shared their reviews.
“I was very impressed by the play and how that had to memorize all of those lines for so long. It was a long play, I would say like 2.5 hours. Also, their accents are very cool because obviously they have an American accent but they changed their voice and it sounded so real. Another thing I was impressed by was the costumes that they came up with, it was really nice. I thought it was just overall very cool there were some funny moments some serious moments, but yeah I thought it was great.” Said Freshmen Eli Gardner
” I was very impressed and it was a very outstanding performance” stated by Junior Haydn Erbert
