Ever since I was a kid, Fox News was always on the TV around my house. A night wouldn’t go by where my parents weren’t watching Fox News, so I always grew up around it. So it is a shocker that Fox parted ways with their famous host, Tucker Carlson. They “parted ways” due to settling a lawsuit by Dominion Voting Services, the company both Carlson and Trump publicly attacked as being responsible for a rigged election in 2020. Dominion’s lawyers used Carlson’s behind-the-scenes texts at Fox during the deposition, which led to leaked chats on social media of him saying he hates Donald Trump.
Carlson has been the host of Fox’s nightly programming since 2016, after they fired Bill O’Reily. Tucker Carlson was a core part of Fox’s success and it is unclear who will replace him permanently and what direction Fox will take.
He was a major contributor to Fox for many reasons. He was a person that all conservatives could unite under in the media world, giving a central voice in contrast to left-leaning stations like CNN. With this, Carlson was also a pleasant host. He was able to tell you what was going on in the world the way you wanted to hear it, while making it comedic at the same time.
On the same date we saw CNN news anchor Don Lemon fired for being accused of showing signs of misogyny and misbehavior towards women. He has been a part of the CNN team since 2014, and like Carlson, was on the TV around the house for many AHS students who grew up with parents watching CNN.
As someone who only remembers Fox News due to Tucker Carlson, it is sad to seem him go, as in my opinion, he was a passionate man that could make half of the U.S happy. (46.8% of voters voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 election)
I’m hoping Fox replaces him with a similar host that’s passionate, has energy, and provides political viewpoints in an entertaining way. For any students who watched Fox or CNN, it’s going to look different for a while. My sense is this might be a bad decision, but that’s the challenge of Journalism in 2023: you can’t really resist change.
