On the last day of school for the seniors on the 22-23 Avonews staff, the timing could not have been more special. Co editors Laurel and Matthew Purcell led their staff to a First Place with Special Merit award and Best High School Digital Newspaper [500-1000 students] award from the American Scholastic Press Association. Editorial cartoonist Catrina Raich, on left, and copy editor Rohini Pallai were significant contributors as well throughout the year.
The Special Merit was noted by judges for Senior Zoe Trexel’s “Guide to Surviving Junior Year” article. The judges remarked “You always read about the new freshman year or the joys of being a senior, but I can’t remember a time where the Juniors were spotlighted for their important events.”
