This year’s schoolwide Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, more commonly known as the PSAT, was administered on Tuesday, October 17th between MODS A through D. Grades 10 and 11 were assigned new testing rooms while the Freshmen attended a “Future Ready” programming in the auditorium and throughout rooms in the new hallway, and the Seniors were allowed to arrive at 11 AM for health screenings and senior project meetings.
This is the first time Avonworth High School has administered PSAT’s online via Chromebooks. Junior Greta O’Brien, who took the PSAT’s on paper last year, said, “I prefer taking them on paper because I feel like on the computer my eyes were like tweaking, and I was getting a headache from the screen.”
For Freshmen not taking the test, they participated in a “Future Ready” program spread over seven sessions, where they learned many useful skills to implement in the workplace, classroom, and anywhere where collaboration, leadership, and communication are at play. They started off their day at 8:06 in the auditorium, when Mr. Geist came to address the grade and motivate them to “look for opportunities to be Future Ready”.
After this, they were separated into groups and went through a total of 7 breakout sessions of activities targeting the development of these important skills. Across the grade, students polled by Avonews staff were generally skeptical about the usefulness of the sessions. Emma Egyed stated, “I didn’t like it — it took from our day and we didn’t have enough time to do anything. No benefit from it.”
