Avonworth Girls Soccer has been having a great season with a record of 17-2-1. They are section champs going for the WPIAL title this year. They are about to play a game against South Park on Halloween, October 31, to see who gets to go to the Highmark Stadium for the WPIAL championship. The game is at Gateway Senior High School at 6:00 p.m. and it is supposed to be a good one.
It was a great game for both of the teams, and Avonworth and South Park fought hard to get the victory. Avonworth set the tone with a beautiful header by Senior Gianna Babusci from an assist by Junior Fiona Mahan in the first ten minutes and got a goal to make the score 1-0. That didn’t stop South Park though, they scored a little bit before the end of the half. At halftime, the score was 1-1 both teams eager to win. The game went back in forth for a while in the second half trying to get a goal. Avonworth knew that they still had a chance in the game, and kept trying to score to take the lead. Both teams were going at it to win the game and go to the WPIAL championships.
Fiona was dribbling through the defense and had this amazing shot by the corner of the net, that made the score 2-1 Avonworth with the lead. Avonworth knew not to celebrate too much and to stay composed to make sure they actually won the game. Avonworth moved the ball around and mainly kept the ball on South Park’s defense side the rest of the time. The timer was counting down 3…2…1…0 game over Avonworth has won again, and is moving on to the WPIAL championship. This will be the fourth year in a row that Avonworth has played at Highmark for the WPIAL finals. If they win it could be back to back to back WPIAL champs for them. These girls have accomplished so much throughout the season. You can tell they have been working really hard for this by the way they play on the field.
