For the second straight year, Mr. Kelly has been a long term sub for a Social Studies teacher at Avonworth. This year he covers Mrs. Chester’s schedule with a section of 11th grade US History, along with elective courses Psychology, Sociology, and Conspiracy Theories.
He stopped by Journalism 1 after the Winter Pep Rally to answer the Avonews Get To Know questions for new teachers, even though technically this is his second year at Avonworth.
Avonews: Where did you attend college and what did you study?
Answer (Mr. Kelly): I attended the University of Pittsburgh. At Pitt, I actually started out as a Science major because that was my first passion in terms of subject of interest. I really thought I wanted to work with animals and learn more about Zoology, but, I found out, doing Science and Biology in college is very hard because you’re competing with a lot of people that want to go into the medical field. So, I ended up having to rethink my career and, then, I changed to History because it was probably my second biggest interest to learn about the past and ourselves. I was actually a double major in History and French, and I, later on, got my masters degree in Social Studies and Education.
Avonews: Do you have any pets?
Mr. Kelly: I do, I have two cats and they are just the best. Their names are Milo and Mewtwo, who is an all white cat. I call him a rare pokemon because he has two colored eyes, he has a blue eye and a green eye, so we named him Mewtwo. My other cat, Milo, is also a great cat.
Avonews: What’s your favorite food?
Mr. Kelly: Indian food is, like, the newest obsession of mine. I never really used to like or enjoy it, but I’ve tried it, not too long ago, and it’s quickly become something that I can eat almost everyday. It’s just chicken and rice, it’s always good every time I’ve had it. It’s very simple, easy, and delicious.
Avonews: What kind of music do you like listening to?
Mr. Kelly: A little bit of everything: hip-hop, classic rock, a little bit of indie rock. Radiohead was my favorite band when I was in high school. I was a really big fan of Radiohead, I still am. I’ve grown to have appreciation for every type of music, except for, maybe, country music.
Avonews: Who’s your favorite hip-hop artist when you were growing up and now?
Mr. Kelly: Good question! When I was in high school, I would probably say that my favorite hip-hop artists were Kanye West and Snoop Dog. But now I’m more into some early 90’s stuff, like Tribe Called Quest [pictured below].
Avonews: Do you listen to Taylor Swift?
Mr. Kelly: It’s not something that I actively seek out. I would not go out of my way to listen to Taylor Swift.
Avonews: Do you tolerate it?
Mr Kelly: Yeah, I can tolerate it. I wouldn’t say it’s something that I’m really gung-ho or excited about.
Question 5: What are the best and worst cereals?
Answer (Mr. Kelly): The best cereal for me, like, my favorite cereal probably is Honey Bunches of Oats. It’s the classic Honey Bunches of Oats with cinnamon flavor. The cinnamon clusters, they’re so so good. I can actually feel myself getting stronger and prepared for my day when I eat it.
Worst cereal, for me, is any chocolate cereal, like Kit Kat cereals.
(Editors note: Not a random selection…the box front was on the Avonews pub lab bulletin board in the back of this classroom, 308, from a prior Core News Values party.
Kelly’s interview was the last interview held in 308 before the pub lab moved due to renovation plans. Room 209 will be the home for the Avonews for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year)
