The Girls Varsity Basketball has had an awe-inspiring season this year as they currently hold a record of 20-1, with a conference record of 10-0. In addition to being the highest-ranked team in the conference, the team is currently ranked 66 in the PA state rankings. Coming off of a 3A WPIAL win last season, the Lopes were already set to a high standard to see if they could match their success last year.
Helping to lead their team to victory, stars Greta O’Brien and Rebecca Goetz have been the top players of both this season, and their WPIAL season last year. The duo has helped pave the way to putting Avonworth Girls Basketball on the map and making them a team to be feared. The girl’s team started the year on a hot streak winning their first 6 games but falling short of their 7th against Armstong. They fought back after the loss and won their next 14 games, which placed them at 10-0 in the conference and currently seated first.
Recently in their game against Beaver Falls, star player Rebecca Goetz scored her 1000th career point and helped lead the team to a 73-41 victory. After that game, she continues to lead the team in points per game at 15.3. In an interview after the game, Coach Dizon told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Rebecca Goetz has been huge and really grown as a player and a leader from last year to this year.” In addition to her accomplishment, the team is on pace to create a dynasty of WPIAL victories if they win this year. After last night’s game against Keystone Oaks, the Lady Lopes prevailed 69-45 to advance to the Semi-Finals. The leading scorers included Rebecca Goetz with 17 points, Emma Oberstenier with 14 points, and Eden Schleis with 11 points. The Lady Lopes’ next game is on Saturday, February 24th at 2:00 pm against Neshannock.
