The beginning of the 2024-2025 school year brought a new hall pass system, myHomework Digital Hall pass, for Avonworth students and teachers. The system aims to keep track of students’ whereabouts and monitor how often they use a hall pass. There are many mixed emotions about the new system, some positive and some negative. For juniors and seniors specifically, many do not like it.
In the past, open mods and lead were used to get help from teachers, make up work, or study. While this is still the purpose, there are more restrictions regarding the hall pass. For example, students cannot request a pass for lead on the day of. Junior, Ella Machen, states, “It’s lowkey annoying because you can’t request a lead pass the day of and that’s inconvenient.” Some students won’t know if they need help until they sit down to do their work and will be unable to get a pass to leave due to it being too late.
In the past, Avonworth has implemented physical passes or students would ask to leave class for whatever reason. Numerous underclassmen feel that the new system is more efficient in knowing where students are and what they are doing. However, it lacks the freedom upperclassmen once had. Senior, Sadie Walsh, believes that “It’s crazy that I had more freedom as a sophomore than I do as a senior.” As freshmen and sophomores, the senior class was not closely monitored, giving them the freedom to leave class for any reason.
Going from having freedom to being closely monitored is a change that the upperclassmen have had to adjust to at the start of the 2024-2025 school year. While efficient in having students’ locations, it is an adjustment for students when looking back on past years.
