Recent headlines show that “brainrot” has been selected as the 2024 Word of the Year by the Oxford English Dictionary.
“Brainrot” describes the feeling that people many experience as a result of consuming social media trends. So many trends, some with a clear meaning and some without, emerged this year and have become a part of our everyday lives. Terms like “Rizz,” “Skibidi Toilet,” and “Knee Surgery” have become part of many student’s vocabulary.
When asked what piece of brainrot was their favorite, students responded with numerous examples. Kate Stoltz, a sophomore, said that her favorite piece of brainrot was “Holding space for defying gravity.” This is a reference to a recent interview featuring “Wicked” stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in which the two actors were confused by a question asked by interviewer.
This shows how exactly brainrot terms arise, which is mostly due to occurrences in pop culture. Other answers included “huzz,” as stated by Freshman Noah Neiss, “skibidi toilet” as states by Sophmore Abby Yeh, and “Mama a girl behind you” stated by Sophmore Poppy Wagers. All of these terms can be heard constantly throughout the school day as humorous exclamations. Interestingly, Junior Paxon Masters and Sophmore Bavly Naklah both stated that they do not tend to reference brainrot and could not name their favorite brainrot slang. Those who spend more time on social media tend to use and understand more brainrot references than those who don’t. Overall, 2024 is a year to remember, and these extravagant terms will forever be known as “brainrot.”
This is missing low-taper fade. Also, we bring the boom. Like my sootcase.
